Celtic transfer plans revealed with one day left in January window

Celtic’s January transfer window plans have been outlined just a day before deadline.

Celtic assistant Shaun Maloney has confirmed the club are working to bring in “two or three” new signings before the transfer window closes, but stressed they will only move for the right profiles rather than chasing numbers.

Speaking as the January deadline approached, Maloney accepted that the change of manager and structure mid-season had slowed progress. Martin O’Neill’s return has reshaped targets and priorities, leaving Celtic trying to complete deals while still adjusting the squad to the new regime.

Maloney told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard:

“The really specific players we want to bring in, or types of players, I was really happy with the two that we brought in. I think the difficulty for the club is that we’ve obviously changed managers and completely changed the structure from the previous guy. So I understand there is a period where the targets completely change.”

“So I’m really happy with the two that we brought in. I think bringing in another two or three would be a massive help. But they have to be the right ones. There is no need to bring in numbers. It has to be the right type of player for what we need and what the team is probably lacking.”

Celtic have already added two faces this month, but injuries, loss of form, and a demanding schedule across domestic and European competitions have left the squad stretched. Maloney underlined that the focus is on players who can contribute immediately, not projects that require a long bedding-in period.

He also moved to defend the board’s role, insisting the club hierarchy are ready to act if agreements can be reached.

“So yeah, the two that we brought in I really like. Hopefully we can do two or three more. The work’s been done. In fairness to the board, they’re there and ready to try and get the deals done. Hopefully that happens.”

“It won’t be through a lack of effort. We’ve had to do a lot of work in a quick period of time because of the management change. But I’ve been really happy with the list of players that we’ve been given and the types of players. So yeah, I’m really hopeful that we can get that done.”
