Celtic win in Old Firm: The stand out performers

Taking a look at the crucial performers on Sunday

On Sunday, Celtic pulled off an absolutely huge win in the Old Firm, as they beat Rangers 3-1 at Celtic Park.

It was the first win in 90 minutes across the last ten Old Firms, and well, what a time to do it. The Hoops are now just one point behind league leaders Hearts with two games remaining.

So, who were the stand out performers for Martin O’Neill’s side?

It would be unjust to start anywhere other than with Daizen Maeda. The Japanese international started on the worst possible note, as he spooned a one-on-one wide of the target 17 minutes in.

But he more than made amends. Eight minutes into the second half, he connected with a Kieran Tierney cutback to expertly finish past Jack Butland in the Rangers goal.

Then, just four minutes later, his incredible overhead kick dipped and looped into the bottom corner. You can hear the Celtic faithful make an “ohh” noise, as if he’ll have gone close, but no cigar. Then, within half a second, the ball nestles into the bottom corner. Unbelievable.

A shoutout to Yang Hyun-Jun, who scored at an absolutely crucial time to level the scores and ease the nerves. A clear turning point in the game. He also created Maeda’s one-on-one opportunity, so he very much had an impact in the final third.

Finally, a word for Liam Scales, who dealt well with Youssef Chermiti, who had started the game very well. His passing was also very important for Celtic in the build up. Another assured performance.
