Celtic working on loan deal to sign Bundesliga striker

Sky Sports report that Celtic are working on a loan deal for a Bundesliga striker.

Celtic are working on a deal to sign SC Freiburg striker Junior Adamu on loan, as the club step up efforts to add a second Bundesliga forward before the transfer window closes.

Sky Sports report that discussions are underway between Celtic and Freiburg over a loan move for the Austria international. Talks are centred on a temporary deal, and Adamu is understood to be waiting for the green light to travel to the UK if an agreement is reached.

Celtic went into January aiming to bring in two strikers. They have already added Tomas Cvancara from Borussia Monchengladbach on loan with an option to buy, and are now trying to secure further support in attack.

Adamu, 22, has found it hard to make a consistent impact in Germany. He has scored just two goals in 18 appearances this season and has seven in 67 games overall for Freiburg. His numbers at former club RB Salzburg were better, with 23 goals and 11 assists in 84 appearances, but even that record is unlikely to fully convince a support desperate for a reliable finisher.

A couple of other clubs are also believed to be monitoring Adamu’s situation. However, the latest reports suggest Celtic are in the strongest position at this stage, with concrete talks already opened and a clear role on offer if he joins.

That will not stop questions from being asked. Celtic need someone who can turn pressure into goals immediately, not simply another project or squad option. Supporters have seen the club “hold talks” and “work on deals” many times this month without a signing being completed, and will be wary of getting carried away until there is real progress.

What’s next for Celtic?

For now, the attention of the Hoops is on the Premiership as Celtic hosts Falkirk this Sunday, February 1, at Celtic Park, for matchday 24.

Martin O’Neill’s men are currently in third place in the league standings with 45 points after 23 matches, with a record of 14 wins, three draws, and six losses.

The Bhoys arrive at this match in good spirits, after defeating Utrecht 4-2 in the final matchday of the UEFA Europa League league phase on Thursday.

On the other hand, the Hoops salvaged a 2-2 draw against Hearts on the last Premiership matchday this past Sunday.
