‘There is more chance’ – Martin O’Neill likely to stay at Celtic, Steven Naismith claims
Celtic pundits debated Martin O'Neill's future after the Hoops won their fifth straight Premiership title.
There is no doubt that Celtic need changes. And many of them. However, after winning the Premiership title in dramatic fashion in a long race against Hearts, some think that Martin O’Neill should stay at the club.
The Hoops beat the Jambos 3-1 on Saturday, with goals from Arne Engels (45+3′), Daizen Maeda (86′) and Callum Osmand (90+7′) to secure their fifth consecutive league title.
After this victory, speculation about the possible and very necessary changes the club will undergo at both the squad and staff levels has begun.
Some pundits want O’Neill to stay at Celtic, even if it is in a different role to manager. Although, of course, some others argue why someone would want to put themselves through the pressure of managing a poorly run club again.
Pundits call for Celtic to keep Martin O’Neill after title win
Chris Sutton, Kris Boyd and Steven Naismith discussed the future of the Hoops. For Sutton, in order to keep O’Neill at Celtic Park, a lot of change will be necessary.
“If Martin stays on, the one thing which he will demand is for there to be a lot of change. I would suspect for Celtic to spend a fair bit of money, because why else would he? I know he has come back twice. But why else would he want to put himself through that again?” Sutton said, via 67 Hail Hail.
For his part, Boyd considers that, even in another role, keeping O’Neill is a must. He said, “Celtic can’t afford for Martin O’Neill to go out of this door. They have to find a role for him, somewhere.”
And for Naismith, it is not impossible. In fact, the former player sees it as a viable option after Saturday’s victory over Hearts. “After the Hearts game, I think there is more chance of him staying than going,” he claimed.
To tell the truth, it cannot be ruled out that O’Neill stays, even as manager, but if it happens, it is clear that it would be a short-term deal, which is always a downside compared to a long-term project.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, as well as Ferencvaros’ Robbie Keane, have been linked to the Celtic job in recent months. Let’s see.
